Fishing in Celtic Country: Murray cod’s the lure

Celtic Country has an outstanding reputation for Murray cod, drawing families, celebrities and fishing writers. However, other species also abound, like rainbow and brown trout, yellowbelly, silver perch, redfin and catfish.

Here’s a selection of fishing spots (obtain permission if accessing streams via private properties):

  • Glen Innes: Beardy Waters, Furracabad, Wellingrove Creeks and Upper Severn for rainbow trout and redfin.
  • Emmaville: Monster Murray Cod Fishing Retreat, fishing/cabin accommodation on 1900ha sheep and cattle property. Close to Emmaville.
  • Ben Lomond: Family fishing for rainbow trout in dams at Silent Grove farmstay, 48km south of Glen Innes; rainbow/brown trout catch/release in lakes at Uncle Billy’s Retreat, 13 km from Ben Lomond.
  • Deepwater: Below bridge 3km open water for Murray cod, yellowbelly, rainbow trout, other spots include 10-mile crossing or hills within 15km of Deepwater for rainbow/brown trout.

Fishing licences are required in NSW: $6 three days, $12 a month, $30 a year; Centrelink and Department of Veteran Affairs concession cardholders exempt, also Aboriginal people for freshwater fishing.
